William E. McGrain was born February 20, 1850, in Louisville, Kentucky. He married Agnes Crane in Potosi, Missouri in 1872.
He came to Dallas in 1875 as the representative of St. Louis capitalists to look after their interests in the old Exchange National Bank of Dallas. He was associated with the insurance firm of Hereford, Kerfoot and McGrain for three years. After this he became connected with the city government, City of Dallas, being appointed City Secretary, which office he held through two administrations in the eighteen-eighties. His last business connection was with the Oriental Laundry, where he was chief clerk until his death in 1911.
