Jere Benjamin Hart was born 23 November 1846, in Bates County, Missouri. He was the son of Edmond Benjamin Hart and Frances Jane Jackson and grandson of Jerre Jackson and Susan Ann Rice Jackson.
Jere fought on the side of the Confederacy during the Civil War. After the war he did not return to Missouri because the state was still full of divided loyalties and turmoil. He came to Texas and Dallas and made his home with his grandparents in the Oak Cliff area until 1866 when he relocated in Palo Pinto County.
He married Mary Joanna Taylor, daughter of Stephen Slade Taylor and Eleanor Aston Maddox, on 1 February 1872. They lived out their lives in Palo Pinto County, rearing 9 children. He established his own ranch and participated in several cattle drives up the Chisholm Trail to Kansas.
