Hilliard Chinche Brite (1858-1930) was born on the banks of the Clinche River in Sparta, Tennessee. He was of English descent. His family came to Texas when he was a child. He was a farmer and worked on one of the Jackson’s farms located at Audelia and Skillman Road in Dallas. He married Georgia Beau Lochard “Creole Sue” (1862-1920) who was born in Louisiana of French descent. They had at least six children: Hilliard Cleveland “Hicky,” William Rex “Sonny Boy,” Jimmie, Sam, Alice, and another girl, name unknown.
William Rex died at age 26, killed when he attempted to rob a Fort Worth streetcar. Sam was a cowboy. Alice lived in Dallas. Nothing is known of the other girl or Jimmie. Hilliard married Alice Amanda Certain, daughter of James M. and Delia F. Certain, buried at McCree Cemetery.
Hilliard “Hicky” served in World War I and was a colorful character much loved by his eight grand sons. He was a deputy sheriff for Dallas County under Sheriff Smoot Schmid. There were stories of jail breaks, raids on bootleggers, shoot-outs, and attempted bribes. A wreck during a high speed chase ended his career and permanently disabled him. He walked with an exaggerated limp. But he turned his talents to running a domino hall and advising the black community on legal matters. They called him the “negro’s lawyer.” He and Alice had two daughters, Wayde and Jimolea, then they later divorced and neither remarried. Their descendants are the children of Wayde and Cloyse Edwin Cloud and Jimolea and Howard Alexander Shugart. They are Cloyse Edwin Cloud, Jr., James LeMac Cloud, Michael Frank Cloud, Jack Hilliard Shugart, Jim Alex Shugart, William Howard Shugart, Rick Mattison Shugart, and Vick Boren Shugart.
