Enoch Mosier and Catharine Myers Mosier

From Proud Heritage, Volume I by DCPA, currently out of print.

Enoch Mosier was born 20 February 1798 in North Carolina. Around 1830 he married Catharine Myers, who was born on 2 December 1815 in Ohio. Census schedules place them in Indiana in the early 1830s. The first three Mosier children were born in Indiana.

Around 1840 Enoch Mosier and his family migrated to Mahaska County, Iowa, and settled in the area of Oskaloosa. Ten more children were born while the Mosiers were here. In the fall of 1855, Enoch Mosier sold his property in Iowa.

According to family records the Mosiers arrived in Dallas County in 1856. They were probably attracted to this area by Jeremiah Mosier, Enoch’s brother, who had settled in Tarrant County. Mosier Valley, north of Arlington, is named for Jeremiah’s family.

Enoch Mosier settled southeast of Hutchins on the W. H. Shelton survey. Today this property is located east of IH45 between Wintergreen and Fulghum roads. Until recently there were still Mosier descendants living in this immediate area.

On 29 August 1859 Enoch Mosier was accidentally killed. The following is an account of the accident from the September 7, 1859 issue of The Dallas Herald:

“Frightful Accident. – Mr. Mozier, a very respectable and worthy gentleman of this county, was accidentally killed a few days ago, while engaged in attending to the running works of his sugar mill. His head was caught between two pieces of the wood work, crushing it instantly, and scattering the brains in every direction. It is one of the most frightful accidents that has ever occurred in this section of the country. Mr. Mozier was an old man, a very worthy citizen, and left a large family.”

Enoch Mosier was buried in the Pioneer Section of Edgewood Cemetery in Lancaster, Texas.

After her husband’s death, Catharine Myers Mosier followed several of her children who had moved to Benton County in northwestern Arkansas. She died on 13 December 1893 at the age of seventy-eight. Catharine Myers Mosier is buried in the Butler Creek Cemetery in Sulphur Springs, Arkansas.
