Christopher Columbus “Major” Huffhines was born in Simpson County, Kentucky, on 29 January 1857 after his parents George and Mary C. Wilson Huffhines had returned to their former home for a brief stay. He was reared in the home of his father built before the Civil War and lived there after his marriage and the birth of most of his children. He built his two-story Colonial circa 1907 on the original homestead.
He married Sarah Elizabeth “Sallie” Chick in November, 1883 in Dallas County. Sallie was born in Simpson County, Kentucky on 8 August 1866, the daughter of J. W. and A. F. Chick who came to Dallas County in 1882. Her brother Robert Lee married Major’s half-sister Mattie A. Jasper. Her other two brothers married members of the Huffhines family.
Major was by occupation a farmer. Deed records show he bought and sold land, including the farm of his uncle and aunt John M. and America E. Stahl Wilson, who came from Simpson County in 1880, settling southwest of Renner with their seven children. They moved to the City of Dallas in 1889.
Major and Sallie were members of the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and active in all church affairs. He was head of the church laymen in Richardson for more than 50 years, a supporter of the Oak Cliff Baptist Seminary until its dissolution, serving as Chairman of the Board for years, and worked for the Baptist Orphanage in Waxahachie. For many years no enterprise in Richardson Community was complete without the name of C. C. Huffhines on the list of workers. He helped organize the first telephone company in Richardson at the turn of the Century. He served on the school board and was vice-president and director of the Citizen’s State Bank for 12 years, retiring in 1931 because of his health.
Major and Sallie’s large country home was the scene for frequent parties and social events.
Sallie died 28 July 1922 and was buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Major died 28 February 1932 and was buried beside his wife after services in the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church attended by nine pastors and many friends and relatives.
Major and Sallie had six sons and six daughters. 1) Cecil Clyde Huffhines born 10 September 1885, died 21 June 1970; married Elmo Huffhines, her second cousin. 2) Cyrus Fields Huffhines born 24 October 1886, died 14 April 1966; married his third cousin Clara Maude Wright. 3) Emory Ward Huffhines born 31 March 1889, died 25 May 1950; married Fannie White. 4) Birdie Huffhines born 27 December 1890; married Dr. Archie Popplewell and Edgar W. McCollum. 5) Irene Huffhines born 28 August 1892, died 5 May 1942; married Lawrence Lee White, brother of Fannie White. 6) Royce Huffhines born 3 January 1894, died 15 November 1974; married Nora Bell Lane and Clara Wright Huffhines, widow of Cyrus. 7) Fannie May Huffhines born 6 June 1897; married Charles Huffhines, a descendant of John Huffhines, Senior’s brother George. 8) John S. “Little Major” Huffhines born 25 February 1900, died 20 August 1970; married Ola Mae Christie. 9) Ophie Chick Huffhines born 19 February 1901; married Charles Grady Smith. 10) Glenn Huffhines born 12 July 1903, died 3 January 1972; married Olena Cypher and Ethel __. 11) Verna Louise Huffhines born 18 July 1907, married Virgil Alien Pistole. 12) Raymond Earl Huffhines born 4 February 1912, died 7 August 1912.
