Orphan Cemeteries

Our Cemetery Committee has put together this list of “orphan cemeteries” which are Dallas County cemeteries that no one looks after. Here is the report from Kathy Ann Reid.


Street addresses and street names, city and county boundaries are subject to change over time. We welcome comments and new information.

Cedar Hill

Crawford Cemetery/Tornado Cemetery – 700 N. Cedar Hill Rd., Cedar Hill. Dallas Central Appraisal District: Owner in 2018, Crawford Fain Driggs LLC, 3421 Lovers Lane, Dallas, Texas, 75225-7631.

Ramsey Cemetery – 1420 High Pointe Ln., Cedar Hill (Graves in yard of residence).

DeSoto or Glen Heights

Porter Cemetery – Off Brookside west of IH 35E access road. South on IH 35E to Parkerville Rd. exit. (Northeast of E. Bear Creek Rd. at S. Uhl Rd.) Small two-grave site.

Garland

Housley Cemetery – 401 Oaks Trail, Garland. South side IH 30, Oaks Trail at Wise Ln. West Graves and Myers Graves are located inside two masonry wall enclosures on separate sides of the street.

Irving

Smith Cemetery – 101 Penn St., Irving. South of E. Grauwyler Rd., west of Maryland Dr. at end of Penn St.

Tompkins Family Cemetery – South side Hwy 183 at Valley View Ln., Irving. One mile east of Tarrant County line. Chain link fence was around it. Last burial 2004.

Mesquite

Haught Cemetery/Slapfoot Cemetery – 5975 Shannon Rd., Mesquite. On private residential property. Condition unknown.

Northwest Dallas

Garvin Memorial Cemetery/Smith Hall Cemetery – 4400 W. Northwest Hwy, Dallas. Walk in entrance on Northwest Hwy. [From the number of reported buried here the cemetery was much larger than presently shown. Interesting & complicated story including lawsuit with guardian ad litem for people buried.] This and surrounding land
City Landmark Status.

Mooneyham Sparkman Cemetery – 2800 Virgo Ln. or 11180 Zodiac Ln., Dallas. South of Royal Ln.

Southeast Quadrant Dallas County

Bailey Cemetery/Cumby Cemetery/Webster Cemetery – South Belt Line Rd. @ Fish Rd., Dallas. Small family cemetery on private property is believed to be to the west of S. Belt Line Rd. Entry was south of the intersection of Fish Rd. & S. Belt Line Rd. In the past the cemetery was fenced and visible from the road. This section of S. Belt Line Rd. was added by Dallas County Public Works and the properties in this area were bisected.

Lagow Cemetery – 3510 Carpenter Ave., Dallas. Between 2 nd Ave. & Scyene Rd. (Hwy 352), southeast of Fair Park.

McKinney Family Cemetery – 10425 Rylie Crest Dr., Dallas. Cemetery on north side Rylie Crest Dr. at Cade Parkway. North of 10500 US Hwy 175. There is a deed from a McKinney for this cemetery. Short chain-link fence and tombstones were visible.

Overton Family Cemetery – 3599 Leatherwood St., Dallas. At E. Overton Rd. North of 3100 E. Illinois Ave. In fenced area with abandoned large cemetery site surrounding this fenced cemetery was overgrown. (THC Landmark)

Patrick-Pruitt Cemetery – 457 Nokes Rd., Dallas County (far southeast corner). East of IH 45, Malloy Bridge Rd. to Parkinson Rd. Nokes Rd. is off Parkinson Rd. On private property owned by S. O. Creek, Ltd.
