Marie Buhrer was one of nine children born to Jacob Buhrer (b. 1855) and Anna (Hinterman) Buhrer (b. 1854). Their house was a white two-story home on 200 acres on the west bank of White Rock Creek. The family attended St. Paul’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Dallas. Marie first attended Floyd School near what is now Lakewood Theater, then she attended Davy Crockett and Old Bryan Street High School. She graduated from St. Paul School of Nursing in 1920. In 1923, she married John C. Gracey. They made their home in Wichita Falls, Texas. Two children were born: John C. Gracey, Jr. (b. 1924) and Ann Mitchell Gracey (b. 1925). When Marie’s husband died in 1931, she returned to Dallas. She and her children made their home with her sister and brother-in-law, Lena and Phillip Hatzenbuehler. She did private duty nursing until 1933, when she became a hall supervisor on the second annex of St. Paul. The hospital was then on Bryan Street. She moved with the hospital to its present location on Harry Hines and worked a total of twenty-seven years.
Marie was a very active member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.
John Gracey, Jr. graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, attended Texas A&M, and served in World War II as a Second Lieutenant. He returned home and graduated from SMU. John married Martha E. Tucker. They had six daughters. John died in 1982.
Ann Gracey graduated from St. Paul School of Nursing and married W. Glenn Williams. They had two children.
Marie Gracey died in 1976. Survivors were two children, eight grandchildren and one great-grandson. There are now twenty-one great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who loved Aunt Marie. There are many of John Gracey, Sr.’s family in Tennessee who were very dear to her.
This was a life of service to others.
