Back in 1875, as railroad engines thundered across the Texas prairie bringing waves of newcomers, a group of original Dallas settlers gathered with growing concern. These weathered pioneers feared their crucial role in building Dallas from wilderness into a thriving town might fade into obscurity.

Determined not to let history slip away, they made a bold decision in the courthouse they had helped establish: form the Dallas County Pioneer Association, the region’s first historical organization. Their mission was threefold—preserve their experiences, honor fellow community builders, and ensure future generations would know Dallas’s true beginnings.

What started on July 13, 1875 as a handful of concerned settlers has evolved into Dallas County’s oldest historical organization, nearly 150 years strong. The Association continues promoting historical education and research, recognizing trailblazers, and preserving the county’s irreplaceable sites and records—ensuring the courage and vision of Dallas’s earliest residents inspire community pride for generations to come.
