A Field Trip to Bird’s Fort
A guided tour of the site of the first settlement in North Texas
Join DCPA for a guided tour of the site of Bird’s Fort – established in 1841 to shelter the first pioneers after the Republic of Texas opened North Texas for settlement. Although the fort was abandoned in Spring 1842 and its inhabitants launched new homesteads, the fort was key to the success of John Neely Bryan’s new village of Dallas. Bryan visited the compound and convinced several its families to relocate downriver to his new townsite. The actual site (in present-day Arlington) remains undeveloped – giving visitors a sense of pioneer Texas.
Our tour will be led by DCPA’s Historian M.C. Toyer – a noted expert on Dallas’ founding and its founding families.
Precautions: Boots or sturdy shoes, long trousers and long sleeve shirts/blouses, wide brim hats, sunscreen, insect spray or lotion, and water recommended.
