Junior Division
Format
All submissions must be typed in black ink on white 8-1/2 x 11 letter size paper with 1 inch margins all around, double spaced, using Times New Roman, Calibri or Arial 12 point font. The title and author’s name (on a separate line) should be centered at the top of each page and sequentially numbered in the bottom margin.
Illustrations in the form of sketches, maps, charts and graphs may be embedded within the text not to exceed one fourth of a page size (3-1/4 x 4-1/2 inches) with caption, and limited to one per page. Photographs are not permitted.
A detailed bibliography is required. The illustrations and bibliography will not be included in total word count.
Length of essay / word count: 1250 – 1500 words (approximately 5 to 6 pages)
Guidelines
All research, preparation and composition must be personally performed by the contestant. The use of Artificial Intelligence or Open Edit resources (e.g., Wikipedia / Wiki or similar) is prohibited.
Subject of Essay

Subtopics – Choose one from this list and include in the essay title. (e.g., Pioneers of Dallas – 1840 to 1860 / Emigration). The subtopic should be fully researched and related to the subject based on the whole population, not a single individual or family group.
- Emigration (suggested elements) Motivation; former homes of emigrants; route and method of travel (e.g., walk, horseback, wagon or stage line, boat, railway, etc.)
- A New Home (suggested elements) Acquisition of property (e.g., grant, purchase, inheritance, rent or lease); amount of property; process to receive a patent or title; legal issues
- Security (suggested elements) Construction of a shelter, dwelling or home including materials and methods; crops, livestock, tools and equipment
- Livelihood (suggested elements) Source of food, water, clothing; generating income or increasing wealth; commercial endeavors
