Historic trees have been recognized in Texas for many years. The City of Dallas recently joined the movement by recognizing a 175 year old pecan tree known as the West Dallas Gateway Pecan. It stands at the west end of the Commerce Street Bridge opposite the Trinity River from downtown Dallas, on the south side of Beckley Avenue. When the Trinity River levees were built, this tree was fortunately outside the boundaries. All the trees between Beckley and the levees were felled.
On April 16, 2023, the Fort Worth Avenue Development Group and the City of Dallas hosted the Texas Historic Tree Coalition in a ceremony to dedicate the West Dallas Gateway Pecan Tree. Special thanks to the Fort Worth Avenue Development for their work on this project.
