George Washington Vinyard and Leana Franklin Adams Vinyard

From Proud Heritage, Volume I by DCPA, currently out of print.

In 1868, after the Civil War, G. W. Vinyard, eighth child born to Abraham and Mary White Vinyard of Vinton and Roanoke, Virginia, arrived in Navarro County, Texas. He met and married Leana F. Adams and they lived near Corsicana until 1876 when they moved to the Cedar Hill Community in Dallas County.

They settled on land belonging to Leana’s father. In 1888 they traded with a son-in law, George S. Wilson, for another place. George Vinyard ran a mill in Duncanville and farmed as most of his neighbors did. He lived on this place at Cedar Hill Road across from Big Stone Cap Road. There he died April 1, 1919. His widow, Leana, lived there until her death July 16, 1930. They are both buried at Trees Cemetery.

Leana Franklin Adams was born August 14, 1844 in Alabama. Her mother’s family name was Wren and her father was B. F. Adams. The father left Alabama with a son, Quincy, to go to Texas. He obtained his land in return for work as a surveyor.

In 1848 the rest of the family started for Texas, stopping in Arkansas to visit relatives. While there, they received word that the father was dead. Some mystery surrounded the circumstances; and they never learned where he was buried. In 1857 while still in Arkansas, the mother died. One daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) and husband, Claiborn Hill, came to Texas and settled in Matagorda County. He was later killed in the Civil War.

In 1858 Leana and her sister, Sarah, and brother-in-law, George Abbott, started for Texas. They finally settled in Montgomery County.

Leana later moved to Navarro County near Corsicana where she met and married George W. Vinyard.

Their children were: Claiborn Elizabeth born 1869, died 1973, married 1887 George Stephens Wilson; Virginia Lee born 1871, died 1962, married 1890 to Robert Lee Hight; Irvin born 1873, died 1873; Jessie Tululah born 1874, died 1969, married 1897 to B. F. Moore; Ewing Dunn born 1876, died 1969, married 1907 to Harriet Bell Daniel; Charles O. born 1878, died 1961, married 1904 to Lucretia Barker; William Wren born 1881, died 1980, married 1914 to Florence Mabel Millwee; Abraham born 1883, died 1946, married Wilmuth Gretchen Miller in 1914. These last three children were born at the Cedar Hill farm home.

Charles O. and Lucretia Vinyard were the parents of Zelda Vinyard Johnston and Verna Vinyard Plummer who submitted this family history.
