John William Rose was born 19 February 1827 in Kentucky and died 30 April 1908. He married Kizzar Catharine Dixon, born 20 June 1833 and died 14 September 1907. She was the daughter of Solomon and Lydia Dixon and was from Missouri. They married 8 June 1855 in Dallas County, Texas. They were farmers and lived northeast of Dallas and northeast of the community of Calhoun.
In 1861 John William Rose served in Company K of the Texas Cavalry during the Civil War. He wrote his wife, telling her of the high prices of provisions, such as flour at twenty dollars per one hundred pounds, bacon at forty cents per pound and salt at thirty to fifty dollars per one hundred pounds. He also told her to take care of his three little boys. How he wished he could see them and hear them talk. He wanted and longed to hear all the news from home and loved ones.
His three sons were: 1) John Walker Rose born Dallas County, 4 August 1856 and died in Old Mexico. He was buried in Tampico, Old Mexico. 2) James Alonzo Rose born 22 June 1858. 3) Benjamin Arthur Rose born 20 July 1861.
