Asa W. Morton and Frances A. Morton

Asa W. Morton was born in Madison County, Kentucky on March 14, 1817. His wife, Frances A. Morton, was born in Montgomery County, Kentucky on October 31, 1817. They moved to Dallas in 1859 and raised their family of four daughters: Mary (Mollie), Frances (Fannie), Anna (Amanda), and Sarah.

The Morton family at one time lived at the corner of Lamar and McKinney Streets. Also at this location, Mr. Morton operated an undertaking business. He later sold out to Ed. C. Smith and moved to a farm near Wheat­land, Texas. He died March 20, 1894; his wife died January 13, 1900. They are buried in the Wheatland Cemetery on South Hamp­ton Road. One of his daughters, Sarah E. Morton (September 7, 1855 – March 2, 1946) is buried beside them.

Amanda Morton married Judge James Thurmond, an eminent jurist of Texas. They had one child, James. After Judge Thurmond’s death, she married Mr. John C. Bigger in 1884 and had one daughter, Fannie, born about 1886. Mr. Bigger, an attorney, was President of the Dallas Republican Club, Assistant Adjutant General Department of Texas G.A.R., and a member of the Republican State Executive Committee.

Fannie Morton married Col. John Payne. They had two children, John and Nona.

Mary (Mollie E.) Morton was married to S.A.T. King on April 23, 1865 in Dallas by George L. Blewett. They had one son, Sui Ross, in 1869. She was widowed and married James Horton (son of Enoch Horton) in Dallas in 1871. They had one child, Frank M. Horton. James’ sister, Sarah, was Mrs. Alexander Cockrell. Mollie died in 1927 and is buried in Viola, Arkansas.
