Harrison Hustead and Prudence Bartlett Hustead

From Proud Heritage, Vol. 1 by DCPA, not currently in print

Harrison Hustead was born December 16, 1800 in the state of Virginia. His wife Prudence Bartlett was born November 22, 1815 in Virginia. They were married June 9, 1833 in Harrison County, Virginia (now West Virginia). They migrated to Illinois about 1836 and then on to Texas. They first homesteaded the section of land now bounded by Plano Road, Miller, Kingsley, and Audelia. By 1845 they acquired the section of land bounded by Camp Wisdom Road, Cedar Ridge Road, Rachero and Duncanville Road in the present town of Duncanville.

“The History of the Cedar Mountains” by Lucretia Barker Vinyard (out of print) tells “they came to Texas and settled on land in the Cedar Mountains and north of what was later Duncanville. There they built a log cabin and a little west of the cabin is the old Hustead burial place.”

Harrison passed away September 8, 1852 and was buried in the Hustead Cemetery. In 1972 the graves were moved to Five Mile Cemetery where Prudence was buried in 1900.

Their children were: 1) James Granville born January 8, 1834; 2) Linda (Brandenburg) born March 1, 1835; 3) Silas Franklin born June 12, 1836; 4) John C. born 1840; 5) Phineas H. born 1840; 6) Columbus C. born January 22, 1843; 7) Newton Jasper born October 22, 1843; 8) Mary Ann (Ricketts) born February 7, 1845 and 9) Elizabeth Jane (McDonough) born May 7, 1852.
