From Proud Heritage, Vol. 1 by DCPA, not currently in print

Winfield Scott Huffhines was born 28 May 1858 in the home of his parents George and Mary C. Wilson Huffhines, who came to Dallas County by wagon train in 1853 from Simpson County, Kentucky. His father was killed in the Battle of Chickamauga in 1863.

Scott helped run the family farm until his marriage on 20 December 1883 to Frances “Fannie” Ann Harris, who was born in Simpson County on 2 July 1867. She came to Dallas County in 1880 with her parents Samuel Pope and Pauline F. Hunt Harris who attended the Shady Grove Baptist Church in Kentucky, the same church that granted letters of transfer to Scott’s grandparents John and Elizabeth Wright Huffhines before they came to Texas in 1853. Fannie’s brothers were John Henry and Thomas Newton “Newt” Harris, the latter a barber in Richardson for many years.

Scott continued his agricultural pursuits southwest of Richardson until after 1900 and spent almost all of his life in the Richardson Community. Fannie died in Godley, Johnson County on 23 December 1902 and was buried in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, a mile west of Scott’s boyhood home.

Scott became a merchant in Richardson. On 5 March 1908 he married Alice Brittain in Kaufman County. She was born 12 September 1876. Their grocery store, located on the southwest corner of Main and McKinney Streets, was a one-story frame building. Their ad in the Richardson Echo of 1 January 1910 read “I thank you for your past business and wish you a happy NEW YEAR, Give me your Grocery business. W. S. HUFFHINES, Phone 210.”

The Huffhines lived in a two-story frame home at what is now Interurban and Kaufman Streets, two blocks south of the Interurban Station. Scott ran his grocery store until his retirement. For several years he was a Deputy District Clerk.

Scott and Alice Huffhines were faithful members of the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Richardson where he was a senior deacon. Winfield Scott Huffhines died on 17 December 1939 and was buried beside his first wife, Fannie, in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

“Aunt” Alice remained in their home on Interurban Street. She died in 1951 and was buried beside her husband.

Scott and Fannie Harris Huffhines had four children: 1) Clarence Lester Huffhines, a Baptist minister, born 20 July 1886, died 17 December 1918 in Nicholasville, Kentucky, buried in Mt. Calvary Cemetery; married Mabel Allen. 2) Stella Huffhines born 8 May 1888; married (1) Wilbert Clark Watson and married (2) Wylie Smith (they divorced). 3) Frank Harris Huffhines born 5 September 1894, died 11 January 1939 in Athens, Texas, buried in Mt. Cal vary Cemetery; married Clifford Moses. 4) Vera Frances Huffhines born 9 April 1900, died 20 May 1976; married William Statler Stratton.
