The Curtis Douglas family settled in Dallas County near Lancaster about 1859. They migrated from Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois.
Curtis, whose parents are unknown, was born in Kentucky about 1819 to 1821. He married Malinda H. Kendall on 16 October 1840 in Sangamon County, Illinois. He is listed on both the 1860 and 1870 Dallas County censuses as a farmer in Lancaster, however, there is some reference to him as being the first Baptist Minister in Lancaster in his daughter’s obituary. In “A History of the First Baptist Church, Lancaster, Texas” (which was organized on 29 September 1867 as The Missionary Baptist Church of Lancaster) both Brother Curtiss Douglass (spelled with a double s) and Sister Malinda Douglass are mentioned among the brethren who met in the Masonic Hall for the purpose of organizing a Baptist Church. Curtis is listed as Third Sergeant on the Muster Roll of Company B Dallas County 13th Brigade C.S.A. which was commissioned on 30 September 1861 with Stephen C. Attebery as Captain. His death date and burial place are both unknown; however, it appears he died circa 1875-78 in Dallas County and was probably buried on the family farm or at Edgewood Cemetery.
His wife, Malinda, was born January, 1815 also in Kentucky, one of ten known children of John Kendall. After her husband’s death, she continued the management of the family farm and is listed as a farmer in Lancaster in the County Directory 1881-82, which was printed by the Dallas Genealogical Society in their Quarterly in 1979. On the 1900 Census of Dallas County, she is listed in the household of her daughter, Olive D. Moffett, on Exposition Street in the city of Dallas. Actual death date and burial place of Malinda is unknown.

John T. Douglas born in Sangamon County, Illinois, joined Co F, Stone’s Regiment 6th Texas Cavalry C.S.A. at the age of 19 on September 1861. Discharged on December 12, 1861 due to disability, chills, fever, dysentery. He was conscripted October 15, 1863 into Company C, Chisum’s Regt. Texas Cavalry C.S.A., was captured at the Battle of Cane River, Louisiana, on April 23, 1864, was transferred to Elmira Prisoner of War Camp in New York on November 16, 1864 and died there of typhoid pneumonia on December 11, 1864. Buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, Elmira, Chemung County, New York.
Lillis Elender Douglas born 9 November 1844 probably in Sangamon County, Illinois. She married James Irvin Lavender in December,1859 in Dallas County. She died at the age of 23 on 12 March 1867 in Lancaster and is buried at Edgewood Cemetery in the Pioneer Section, Lancaster, Dallas County, Texas.
James Henry Douglas born in 1845 in Illinois, probably Sangamon County. He was a Pvt. in Co C Chisum’s Regt. Texas Cavalry C.S.A. and was captured at the Battle of Cane River, Louisiana, on April 23, 1864. He was sent to a Union Prisoner of War Camp in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he died of acute diarrhea on October 21, 1864 at the age of 17 years. Probably buried in New Orleans, Louisiana.
George W. Douglas born in 1848 probably in Iowa. Date of death unknown except prior to Place of burial unknown.
David J. Douglas born 1850 probably Iowa. No other data on this child.
Olive Dixon Douglas born 14 May 1855 in Springfield, Illinois; married in Dallas County on 1 May 187 3 to Garrett Davis Moffett. She died 29 July 1951 and is buried at Grove Hill Cemetery, Dallas, Texas.
Cornelia Ann Lutheria Douglas born Septem ber, 1857 in Illinois, probably Springfield. Married in Dallas County on 21 June 187 4 to Alpheus C. Cook. They were divorced by 1906 and last known record of this child is the 1910 census at which time she was living in Shackelford County, Texas.
June Anderson Shipley is descended from Curtis and Malinda Kendall Douglas. Her grandmother was Mary Rosannah Lavender, the child of Lillis Elender Douglas and James Irvin Lavender. That line is given:

Eugene P. Anderson, Jr. born 1886, died 1966, buried Edgewood Cemetery. Married Freda Ileen Winniford born 1895, died 1978, buried Edgewood Cemetery. Children: Laura Jean Anderson and June Anderson.
