June 2022 Meeting

Those in attendance at C. C. Young’s Meeting Hall were delighted to learn about the Peak family from speaker Ann McKinley. Ann is the Chief Advancement Officer for Juliette Fowler Communities.  She discussed the century long history of the Juliet Peak Fowler benevolent organization and the family members of Jefferson and Martha Peak.

In addition to relating the origin and activities of the Juliet Fowler Communities, the topics also included street names that take their origins from the names of this historic family. This is not an exhaustive list, but the various street names include the following:

  • Carroll Avenue – named for son Carroll Peak
  • Peak Street – for the family (originally named Martha Street for Martha Peak, but renamed Peak Street after her husband Jefferson Peak’s death
  • Sycamore Street – originally named Matt Street for Mathias Peak, a son
  • Junius Street – named for their second son with the name Junius (the first son named Junius died before the family came to Texas)
  • Worth Street – named for son Worth
  • Victor Street – named for son George Victor
  • Flora – named for daughter Flora
  • Harwood Street – named for a son in law, husband of Sarah Peak
  • Field Street – named for a son in law, husband of Flora

There were other fascinating topics discussed by our speaker and we hope that she will return to expand on them at a later meeting. We hope you’ll join us!
