Margaret Morris Hughes, daughter of William and Ailsey Hughes of Hughesville, Virginia, married John Branaman Bachman in 1845 in Maury County, Tennessee. She was born in 1824 in Stokes County, North Carolina.
John Bachman was the son of Dr. Daniel Bachman of Delina, Tennessee, (Marshall County). He was born in 1821.
Margaret and John Bachman became the parents of three boys: W. Fletcher, Daniel, and Samuel Hughes; and four daughters: Zuleika Elmira, Alice Amanda, Mary Ann and Letitia Jane. The Bachman family came to Texas in 1854 settling in the Peters Colony. Their homestead lay north of Bachman’s Branch (also known as Browning’s Branch) and took in what is known today as the Walnut Hill Shopping Village, seven miles north of Dallas.
John Bachman was a Methodist lay preacher, as well as a farmer. The Bachmans were organizing members of the Cochran Chapel Methodist Church, which was built on the first Dallas County site deeded for a Methodist Church in 1856. They are buried in the Cochran Chapel Cemetery as are their children and grandchildren up to the present generation.
Their daughter, Zuleika, was born in 1848 in Marshall County, Tennessee. She came to Texas with her parents when she was six years old. She married William Berry Taylor in 1867, when she was 19 years old.
