Brantley Montgomery Bond (1848-1933) came to Dallas from Mississippi in 1873 where he opened a neighborhood grocery store across from the county courthouse. Marrying fellow Mississippi native Caroline Alvernon “Carrie” McDonald (1857-1934) on December 22, 1876, the Bonds’ grocery served county officials who over time encouraged the soft-spoken grocer to run for public office. Brantley Bond served for 25 years as the Clerk of the 44th District Court and also served three terms as Dallas County Treasurer.
After suffering a stroke, Brantley died at the family residence on December 22, 1933 at the age of 85 on what would have been the couple’s 57th wedding anniversary. Carrie died of a cerebral hemorrhage on September 9, 1934 at the age of 76. Both Mr. and Mrs. Bond are buried at the historic Greenwood Cemetery.
