Topic: “North Texas Electric Interurban Railways: 1901-1948”
This presentation will discuss the historical development and ultimate collapse of the privately-owned interurban railway lines that connected Dallas with surrounding cities during the first half of the 20th century. The interurbans became a popular mode of intercity transportation because they were more convenient and flexible than steam railroads, but the greater convenience and flexibility of the automobile ultimately caused this industry to decline and shut down. During their heyday, interurbans were an important component of the transportation system that helped spur commerce and economic development in north Texas.
